#TakeTwoKnees

Yesterday, during my school’s remote strings class via zoom, my teacher brought up a recent Facebook post by the principal clarinetist of the NYPhil - Anthony McGill. As a faculty member at the Juilliard School, Mr. McGill frequently held discussions or played his clarinet for the MAP students, and I always loved his inspiring speeches and beautiful playing. After reading his post, however, my respect for him increased even more. (Check out his Facebook post here: https://www.facebook.com/anthony.mcgill.75/posts/10158085069355865)

He addresses the social justice issues that became more apparent with the COVID-19 outbreak in a way that taught me what a musician’s role in society is. His powerful words and his new, unique take on “America the Beautiful” were heartening.

I am inspired by the many other musicians who decided to #TakeTwoKnees with Mr. McGill by playing a piece or song of their choice on their instruments. Despite our current social-distancing situation, people can come together this way to show support and love, making this world a better place. I am thankful for the amazing individuals like Mr. McGill who strive to make a change for the better and who I can look up to.
